EARTHQUAKE DISASTER AT WEST SUMATRA

West Sumatra Earthquake in March 2007 is a series of earthquake with power range of 5,8 to 6,4 Richter scale that knocks over numbers of sub-provinces in Sumatra Barat province, Indonesia, on March 6th 2007 which is started at 10:49 WIB. The impact of the earthquake can be felt unto Singapore and Malaysia. Until March 7th 2007, 52 people are reported dead as victims of this earthquake.

Impact

This earthquake disaster has destroyed governmental property buildings and citizens, and also causes numbers of casualties, dead and injured. Padang-Bukittinggi and Padang-Solok road jammed because of the landslide. Besides that the earthquake is predicted has triggered activities at Gunung Talang. A new crater in Nagari Gunung Rajo is also formed by the effect of the earthquake.

Casualties

Number of dead casualties in this disaster on March 6th 2007 reported reach 70 people. But on the next day, West Sumatera Governor, Gamawan Fauzi rectifies the number of casualties to 52 people, with reason some victims are double counted.

In the first few days, the company delivered Rp. 5m in cash and 8 large scale emergency tents. The contrast has quickly been drawn with the criticisms attracted by the response of federal and state officials, whose operations and disaster planning have been widely seen to have fallen well short of what was required.

People at the remote area praised the company during the aid distribution, and a number of commentators have made the observation that had the authorities been as well organized there would not have been such a crisis.
